Share

Florida – As the Presidential Preference Primary Election on March 19, 2024, approaches, Florida voters face a critical deadline. Tuesday, February 20th, marks the final day for new voter registrations and for existing voters to make any changes to their political party affiliation. The State of Florida emphasizes the importance of acting promptly to ensure eligibility for participation in the upcoming election.

Methods for Registration and Changes

Voters have several convenient options for registering or updating their information:

  • Online Registration: Accessible at registertovoteflorida.gov/home, offering an easy and quick way to register or update voter details.
  • In-Person or By Mail: The Elections Department Main Office located at 2700 NW 87 Avenue, Miami, FL 33172, will extend its hours until midnight on Tuesday, February 20th, to accommodate last-minute registrations and changes. Additionally, the Branch Office in the Stephen P. Clark Center Lobby at 111 NW 1 Street, Miami, FL 33128, is available on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mail-in forms must be postmarked by the deadline date.

Voters are encouraged to use the Voter Information tool available online to verify their registration status, preview their personalized sample ballot, and confirm their designated Election Day voting location.

Understanding Florida’s Closed Primary System

Florida operates under a closed primary system, which restricts primary election voting to registered party members for their specific party’s primary.

For the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary Election, the Republican Party will hold a primary to choose their presidential nominee. In contrast, the Florida Democratic Party has nominated a single candidate, eliminating the need for a Democratic primary ballot. Consequently, Democratic voters and those with no party affiliation will not participate in the Presidential Preference Primary.

Despite these restrictions, all registered voters in South Miami and Surfside have the opportunity to vote on municipal matters included in the March 19th ballot, irrespective of their party affiliation.
