Florida – Several Macy’s stores and Furniture Galleries across South Florida are set to close in the upcoming months, impacting locations from Miami to Boynton Beach, as part of the retail giant’s broader strategy to shutter underperforming stores nationwide. The move is part of Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” plan, which seeks to revive the business by emphasizing more profitable branches and improving online customer experiences.
Longstanding mainstay of American retail, Macy’s revealed on Thursday intentions to eliminate about 150 stores across the nation over the next three years. Among the 66 officially announced closures are specific South Florida establishments including the Macy’s at Boynton Beach Mall, Pembroke Furniture in Pembroke Pines, Ft. Lauderdale Furniture in Fort Lauderdale, and the South Dade Furniture Gallery in Miami. The Boca Raton Furniture Gallery has also ceased operations.
Not limited to South Florida, other stores in Tampa, Altamonte Springs, and Sarasota have also made the list of closed locations. This consolidation endeavor reflects evolving consumer behavior as well as the more general challenges confronting physical stores in the digital era.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc.
Clearance sales at the impacted Macy’s Backstage and Furniture Galleries are slated to start in February as part of the closing process and provide significant discounts on still-in-stock items. With an eye on offering a more engaging shopping experience that fits the changing needs of today’s consumers, Macy’s wants to improve its 350 stores and their online counterparts.

The initiative, which began in 2024, has already shown promise. Along with raising revenues for three consecutive quarters, investments in the initial 50 pilot stores have significantly improved Macy’s customer satisfaction levels. Building on this achievement, Macy’s intends to keep improving its retail fleet and online presence throughout 2025.
