Miami, Florida – Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, along with officials from Miami International Airport (MIA), recently celebrated a significant advancement in the airport’s modernization plan with the inauguration of a new glass passenger boarding bridge at gate H17.
Transforming Passenger Experiences with Glass Boarding Bridges
The new glass boarding bridge at gate H17 is part of a larger initiative that saw its first such structure unveiled at gate D14 in winter 2022. These glass bridges are set to revolutionize the way travelers interact with the airport environment by offering a more open, airy entrance and exit, thereby reducing the enclosed feel typical of traditional steel jet bridges. The sleek design and enhanced visibility not only elevate passenger comfort but also align with contemporary architectural trends.
Mayor Levine Cava expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting, “I am so proud to unveil our newest glass bridge at MIA and announce our ambitious plans to introduce 60 more, making MIA the largest user of these energy-efficient innovations in the country. These bridges not only enhance the traveler experience but also demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and innovation.”
Miami International Airport plans to install a total of 62 glass bridges by 2028, positioning itself as a leader among U.S. airports in adopting these innovative structures. The advantages of glass over traditional materials include not just aesthetic enhancement but also increased energy efficiency, which contributes to lower operational costs through savings on cleaning and temperature control.

Modernization in Action
Under the airport’s Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) Plan, significant upgrades have been made across the facility. Ralph Cutié, MIA Director and CEO, highlighted the importance of first impressions for travelers entering Miami-Dade County. “The boarding bridge is that critical first step a visitor takes into MIA and Miami-Dade County,” he said. “What better way to give a positive first impression of our county than to see our magnificent Miami skyline as soon as you exit your flight?”
In addition to the boarding bridges, the M.I.A. Plan has already modernized 30 gates with state-of-the-art steel bridges since 2019. Going forward, the remaining 126 bridges at MIA are set to be replaced with the new glass design.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Overhauls
The broader scope of MIA’s modernization includes a $1.7 billion investment in maintaining and upgrading vital infrastructure. This includes the replacement or renovation of all 616 elevators, escalators, and moving walkways in need of updates. The plan outlines that at least 30 conveyance units will be upgraded or replaced annually over the next five to seven years.
Additionally, MIA’s 207 public restrooms are undergoing significant renovations, with 33 already completed in concourses D, H, and J. An additional 32 restrooms are scheduled for updates in 2024, ensuring facilities meet the highest standards of comfort and accessibility.
The airport is also committed to a Future-Ready Capital Improvement Program, investing over $7 billion to prepare for the demands of future air travel. This comprehensive approach ensures that MIA continues to serve as a gateway not just to Miami-Dade County but to the world, reflecting the commitment to excellence in service, safety, and passenger satisfaction.
