Republicans “recognize this as a B.S. trial”: Trump leans on allies to slam Daniels following testimony at New York trial

Florida – Donald Trump’s legal battles in Florida and New York are pivotal chapters in the former president’s post-White House life. In Florida, the case centers on Trump’s handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. He faces 40 felony counts for allegedly retaining sensitive documents and obstructing federal efforts to recover them. Meanwhile, in New York, Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records related to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged affair during the 2016 presidential campaign.

New York Trial

The courtroom drama surrounding Donald Trump and Stormy Daniels recently escalated as Daniels took the stand in Trump’s hush-money trial in New York. With the former president restricted by a gag order, he has turned to his allies to publicly defend him and attack the credibility of the proceedings.

During the trial, Trump’s frustration was palpable. He was visibly distraught and agitated by Daniels’ testimony, which detailed an alleged sexual encounter between the two. The former president, known for his usually dominant presence, was seen shaking his head and muttering in disapproval, prompting the judge to remind his attorneys to keep him in check.

Allies Rally in Defense

Trump’s inability to speak directly about the trial has led him to utilize a network of supporters to relay his perspective. Among them, his son Eric Trump, who questioned the relevance of Daniels’ explicit details, and Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who accompanied Trump to one of the trial sessions. Scott told reporters that the trial seemed like nothing more than an attempt to interfere with the election, a sentiment Trump later echoed on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Scott Jennings, a Republican strategist, openly criticized the trial, dismissing it as “a complete and total B.S. trial in a kangaroo court that should’ve never been brought.” This view reflects a broader skepticism among Trump’s supporters, who see the trial as politically motivated rather than a legitimate legal proceeding.

Other surrogates, such as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and former Representative Lee Zeldin, have been active across media channels, painting the trial as unjust and defending Trump’s character. These surrogates argue that the details brought forth by Daniels, which include descriptions of Trump’s underwear, are irrelevant to the legal aspects of the case.

Daniels Stands Firm Amidst Media Frenzy

Daniels has maintained her stance throughout the ordeal, asserting her credibility and denying any changes to her story despite cross-examinations aimed at highlighting inconsistencies. Her firm responses have only intensified the media circus surrounding the trial.

The trial has also sparked discussions about the impact of such high-profile cases on public opinion. A recent PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll indicated that a significant portion of Americans are not closely following the trial. However, Jennifer Horn, the former chair of the New Hampshire GOP and a co-founder of the Lincoln Project, suggested that Daniels’ testimony might particularly affect Trump’s standing with female voters, casting him in a negative light.

Trump’s legal team has been proactive during the proceedings, with attorney Susan Necheles challenging Daniels’ account and attempting to depict her as seeking fame and financial gain. Meanwhile, Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche has pushed for a mistrial, arguing that the trial’s constraints and Daniels’ continued public presence have unfairly impacted Trump.

As Trump gears up for a rally in New Jersey, the trial’s outcome remains uncertain. However, what is clear is the divide it underscores within American politics and public opinion, with Trump’s allies rallying to his defense and detractors sharpening their criticisms. This trial, with all its theatrical elements and political undertones, continues to be a focal point of national attention, reflecting the ongoing turbulence in American political life.
