Residents invited to drop off natural trees at Broward County parks for recycling

Broward County, Florida – Through the annual Chip-a-Tree project, Broward County encourages local residents to begin the new year on a green note as the holiday season ends. This environmentally friendly initiative provides a useful approach to get rid of natural holiday trees and support local sustainability projects.
Through this program, thousands of trees are gathered annually instead of ending up in landfills and rather are used as mulch for the county’s park system. Tens of thousands of trees have been effectively recycled by the Chip-a- Tree program thereby supporting the environmental preservation initiatives in the county.
Participants in the program must strip their trees of all decorations before drop-off—tinsel, lights, and ornaments—as decorated trees cannot be handled. Artificial trees are not approved. Each of the eleven participating parks across the county can have participants bring up up to two natural trees per vehicle. Garbage trucks and business vehicles are not allowed to participate in the drop-offs in order to guarantee a smooth running of the operation.
The Chip-a-Tree program kicked off on Thursday, December 26, 2024, and runs until Monday, January 20, 2025, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Before delivering their trees to one of the assigned sites, this calendar gives locals plenty of time to engage in post-holiday discounts and events. Anyone going to recycle their trees will be exempt from the regular admittance prices for weekends and holidays, therefore removing any financial barriers to participating.
