Sunrise Boulevard resurfacing enters new phase with overnight work starting in January

Broward County, Florida – In the middle of January, work will start on a new phase of road upgrades along Sunrise Boulevard. This is another stage in a long-term plan to make a busy stretch of road in the City of Sunrise more efficient.

The next step will be to mill and resurface Sunrise Boulevard between Sawgrass Corporate Parkway and North Flamingo Road. This part of the project is the third phase of a larger project that is being paid for by a gas tax and is meant to make the road safer, improve drainage, and make the road conditions better overall. Construction is set to begin on January 11, 2026, and last until July 2026, but this could change depending on the weather and other unexpected events.

The first parts of the project were finished in the last two years. The first phase of construction ended in July 2023 and was mostly about cleaning and checking the drainage system under the road. The second phase, which ended in September 2024, included small repairs to the drainage system and the installation of curb ramps for pedestrians that met ADA standards. The effort to resurface the road will expand on previous improvements by fixing the driving surface itself.

Construction will happen at night to keep traffic and local businesses, including Sawgrass Mall, from being too affected. From 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, crews will be working. At least one of the three travel lanes in each direction will stay open during construction hours to keep traffic moving. Variable message signs will also be in the area for drivers and pedestrians to see, giving them updates and safety tips.

County officials advise those who are driving through the work zone to stay vigilant and give themselves more time. People who live in the area and have questions about the project should call the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division or the project manager directly for further information. County administrators say the work is a critical investment in keeping the road in good shape, and they thank the public for their patience while the construction continues.
