Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates fatal deputy-involved shooting involving wanted suspect in Davie

Davie, Florida – Florida authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting that left a wanted suspect dead Monday evening following an attempted arrest in Davie.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken the lead in investigating the shooting, while several units within the Broward Sheriff’s Office are conducting separate criminal and administrative investigations into the events that unfolded.

According to investigators, the incident began at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29, when members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Gang Task Force and the Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (VIPER) Unit worked together to locate 27-year-old Napolian Marquez Powell.

Authorities said Powell was wanted on active criminal warrants for fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement. He was also the subject of a DNA warrant connected to a Broward County firearms investigation.

At about 7 p.m., detectives found Powell sitting inside a white 2026 Tesla at a Wawa gas station near the 6300 block of Stirling Road in Davie.

Suspect fled before confrontation with deputies

Investigators said deputies approached Powell in an effort to take him into custody. Instead of surrendering, Powell allegedly ran from the vehicle and fled on foot across the street.

A short time later, deputies caught up with him near the 4200 block of Davie Road Extension, where they made another attempt to arrest him.

According to investigators, Powell actively resisted arrest once deputies made contact, leading to a physical struggle between him and the responding officers.

During the confrontation, detectives said deputies attempted to reduce tensions by creating distance from Powell and repeatedly instructed him to surrender the firearm they believed he possessed.

Authorities stated that despite those efforts, the situation continued to escalate.

Investigators said deputies feared for their safety during the encounter and opened fire, striking Powell.

Emergency responders arrived, but Powell was pronounced dead at the scene in the parking lot of a nearby McDonald’s.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting.

At the same time, detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit are examining the events that led up to the shooting, while the agency’s Internal Affairs Unit has launched an administrative review in accordance with department policy.

As required under Broward Sheriff’s Office procedures, six deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative assignment while the investigations remain ongoing.
