Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Broward County’s Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division has announced a significant infrastructure enhancement project along NE 56th Street in Fort Lauderdale. The project, which is funded by gas tax revenues, will focus on correcting sidewalk deficiencies to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. The planned upgrades span from NE 6th Avenue to NE 18th Avenue, with work scheduled to commence on June 17 and a completion target set for October 2024.
Project Details and Schedule
The primary goal of the project is to address and repair existing issues with the sidewalks along NE 56th Street to ensure safer and more accessible pathways for pedestrians. Given the proximity to Northeast High School, the construction schedule has been thoughtfully arranged to coincide with the school’s summer break, minimizing disruption to students and staff.
Throughout the construction period, at least one traffic lane on NE 56th Street will remain open to ensure that vehicular access is not severely impacted. Additionally, access to local businesses and residential driveways will be maintained, ensuring that daily activities can continue with minimal inconvenience.

Communication and Support
To keep the community informed and to manage traffic effectively during the construction phase, variable message signs will be strategically placed in the area. These signs will provide timely updates to motorists, nearby businesses, and pedestrians, helping them navigate the changes and plan their routes accordingly.
