Broward County launches critical bridge project to address safety concerns in Plantation

Plantation, Florida – Crews from Broward County’s Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division are getting ready to start a big project aimed at fixing up a bridge in Plantation. The work will begin on Tuesday, May 27, and will focus on the North Pine Island Road bridge between Sunrise Boulevard and Sunset Strip. The Florida Department of Transportation’s recent inspection found various structural problems that need to be fixed in order to keep the bridge safe and last a long time.

Local gas tax money will be used for this important repair, which shows that the County remains committed to keeping its infrastructure in good shape. Engineers have come up with a construction plan that looks ahead to the future in order to keep the community as little disrupted as possible. Most of the work to fix the bridge will take place below it, where workers will use floating platforms placed up in the canal below. Officials think that this method will keep most of the bridge open to traffic and prevent the big problems that usually come with repairs like these.

For most of the construction time, drivers and people who live in the vicinity won’t have to deal with lane closures. But some temporary closures will be needed to finish certain projects. During a four-week period, one or more lanes may be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is to fix the guardrails and take out and rebuild the bridge’s expansion joints.

There will also be one week of overnight work on the deck waterproofing and resurfacing, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The County promises that all driveways and sidewalks will stay open during these times, so both residents and businesses will still be able to get to them.

The County thinks the whole project will be done by December 2025, as long as there are no unexpected problems, such bad weather or problems that come up during the work. Officials say this schedule is realistic, but they warn that bridge repairs can sometimes go wrong.

Residents can call the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division at 954-357-6040 if they have any questions or complaints. You can also ask Project Manager Stanley Bateman questions about the project by calling 954-647-6490 or emailing [email protected].

Broward County officials thank the community for being patient and working with them during this important bridge upgrade. They stress that the short-term inconvenience is worth it for the long-term safety and better infrastructure in Plantation.
