Broward County, Florida – Thanks to a cooperative effort between the Public Works’ Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division and Florida Power and Light (FPL), the Franklin Park neighborhood in Broward County is expected to benefit from a significant overhaul to its street lighting system. Funding this enormous project from transportation surtax funds, it aims to improve accessibility and safety for local drivers as well as pedestrians.
Starting with the completion of its first phase in November 2024, the initiative witnessed notable upgrades including new sidewalks, ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps, and swale modifications. Building on this development, the second phase—which is scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 5, 2025—will concentrate on the installation of a new lighting system, with an aim of completion in July 2025. This chronology depends on ideal conditions for the weather and the lack of unanticipated delays.
Durable concrete light poles fitted with energy-efficient LED luminaires are expected to be installed as a part of the project. These new structures will be strategically placed within the county’s right-of-way, ensuring compliance with both the Florida Department of Transportation and County lighting standards. The design especially aims to improve night-time visibility and safety with enhanced lighting for walkways and roadways.

Some disturbance is unavoidable throughout the building process. Traffic officials will control vehicle traffic diversions during off-peak hours in order to lessen impact. In the same vein, pedestrian access will be redirected to provide safety around building areas.
“Improved lighting in Franklin Park makes the neighborhood safer for pedestrians and drivers. Concrete poles can better withstand severe weather. These latest improvements compliment the work that has been completed to make this area more accessible for everyone in the community,” said District 8 Commissioner Robert McKinzie, whose district includes the Franklin Park neighborhood.
The project has been scheduled in close coordination with the Franklin Park Homeowners Association. The project specifics were carefully addressed with the community and board members before the start of this phase to make sure the improvements satisfy local needs.
