Broward prepares $12.7 million Sheridan Street bridge lift to protect Turnpike traffic
Broward County, Florida – Broward County is preparing to lift a busy stretch of Sheridan Street, where the bridge passes over Florida’s Turnpike, in a $12.7 million safety project meant to give taller vehicles more room and reduce the chance of strikes to the structure.
The work is being led by the County’s Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division in partnership with contractor Structural Technologies. Mobilization is expected to begin in June 2026, with major construction starting in July. If the schedule holds, the project will be completed by Spring 2027. The half-mile project is located in District 7, represented by Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis.

At the center of the work is a straightforward but important change: the Sheridan Street Bridge will be raised by two feet. That will increase the vertical clearance from 14 feet, 6 inches to 16 feet, 6 inches, bringing the bridge in line with current clearance standards and helping prevent vehicle impacts and costly structural damage.
The project will do more than lift the bridge. Crews will also reshape the roadway profile along the corridor, install new curbs, gutters and sidewalks, improve driveways, add designated shared lanes for cyclists or motorists, and upgrade lighting and drainage systems in the area.

Construction will move in two main phases to limit disruption. From summer through fall 2026, westbound lanes of Sheridan Street will close while eastbound lanes are adjusted to carry one lane of traffic in each direction. During that time, crews will elevate and reconstruct the westbound side. In winter 2026 into 2027, the pattern will shift. Eastbound lanes will close, westbound lanes will carry traffic in both directions, and crews will work on the eastbound side.

Motorists should also expect periodic complete nighttime closures of Sheridan Street while traffic patterns are set up. Access to local homes and businesses will remain open throughout construction, and emergency vehicles will have access at all times.
On Florida’s Turnpike, three travel lanes will remain open in each direction during the day. Nightly single-lane closures will be needed to install bridge jacking support systems. Up to 12 nights of full Turnpike closures are planned between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. for bridge lifting work in August 2026 and December 2026.
During full closures, northbound drivers will exit at Hollywood Boulevard, use US 441/SR 7, and re-enter at Griffin Road. Southbound drivers will exit at Griffin Road or westbound SR 84, use US 441/SR 7, and return at Hollywood Boulevard.
Advanced warning signs, work zone indicators and lighted message boards will be placed throughout the corridor. The project team is also coordinating with municipalities, schools and neighborhood associations. Questions or concerns can be directed to the Project Hotline at 954-218-7304.
