North Lauderdale, Florida – The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is intensifying efforts to find the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run incident that tragically ended the life of a juvenile male in North Lauderdale. Detectives have released a photo of a vehicle similar to the one involved, hoping it will prompt public tips that can lead to identifying the perpetrator.
Tragic Incident Details
The incident occurred when Mark Garay, a young bicyclist, was traveling northbound within a designated bike lane. According to the preliminary investigation, at the same time, the driver of a white, older model, four-door sedan—possibly a Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis—was also heading northbound on North State Road 7 within the 5100 block. The vehicle then veered into the bike lane, striking Garay. The impact was so severe that it projected Garay to the right and off the side of the road, where he remained for approximately one hour before being found.

Investigators noted that after the collision, the driver did not stop to provide aid or report the accident. Instead, the individual fled the scene, heading northbound before making a U-turn to pass the scene again, this time southbound, effectively evading immediate detection.
The alarm was raised after Garay’s family grew worried upon his failure to return home from work. His location was eventually discovered, and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was called to the scene, where they pronounced him dead. The Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that the fatal event occurred in the city of North Lauderdale.
