Tallahassee, Florida – Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the longest Gulf Red Snapper recreational season for 2024. Spanning 103 days, this year’s season will include separate summer and fall segments, accommodating major holiday weekends like Father’s Day, July 4th, and Thanksgiving.

A Record-Setting Fishing Season

“I am proud to announce that this snapper season will be the longest season since our state took over red snapper management in the Gulf,” Governor DeSantis stated, emphasizing Florida’s stature as the “Fishing and Boating Capital of the World.” His announcement came with excitement for the fishing community, which eagerly anticipates the red snapper season each year.

Rodney Barreto, Chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, echoed the governor’s sentiments, noting, “Under Governor DeSantis’ bold leadership, we are maintaining Florida as the Fishing and Boating Capital of the World with another record-breaking Gulf recreational red snapper season.”

This initiative not only enhances Florida’s reputation for premium fishing experiences but also aligns with ongoing efforts to attract tourists seeking world-class outdoor activities.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Executive Director Roger Young highlighted the widespread anticipation for the season among anglers nationwide. “Anglers from all over the country look forward to Gulf recreational red snapper season and the iconic fishing opportunities Florida provides yearly,” he remarked.

Young also thanked the governor, the legislature, and the anglers themselves for their continued support and investment in the State Reef Fish Survey, which supplies the crucial data enabling the extension of the fishing season in state and federal waters.

2024 Season Details

The summer portion of the red snapper season will commence on June 1 and extend through July 31, covering 61 days of potential fishing. The fall season promises 42 days of fishing, making it the longest since the state began managing the season.

It will span several weekends from early September through the end of November, including Labor Day and Veteran’s Day weekends, thus offering ample opportunities for anglers to partake in these prized catches.

Despite the impressive length of the Gulf Coast season, it’s worth noting the stark contrast with the federal government’s management on Florida’s East Coast, where the expected Atlantic Red Snapper Season may last only 0–2 days. This discrepancy underscores the unique success of Florida’s data-driven approach to fisheries management in the Gulf.

Preparation and Regulations

For those planning to fish for red snapper, whether from private recreational vessels or charter vessels, it’s important to register as a State Reef Fish Angler at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com—even for those exempt from fishing license requirements. This annual registration is crucial for maintaining the sustainability and management of this popular fishery.
