Broward County begins humanitarian relief effort to support families affected by devastating Venezuela earthquakes

Coconut Creek, Florida – Broward County is organizing a large humanitarian relief effort to assist people in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country on June 24, causing widespread destruction, severe damage, and the loss of many lives.

County officials announced that beginning Monday, July 6, residents and businesses across Broward County will have the opportunity to donate essential supplies that will be sent to the communities hardest hit by the disaster. The initiative is intended to help families as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding homes, restoring electricity, and recovering basic services damaged by the earthquakes.

Officials say the effects of the disaster are expected to continue for months, and possibly years, making continued support critical for those affected.

County calls on residents and businesses to help

Broward County is encouraging the entire community to participate by donating items that will provide immediate assistance to earthquake survivors.

Among the most needed supplies are non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, baby supplies, pet necessities, and disaster recovery equipment. Officials are also requesting tents, sleeping bags, first aid kits, solar-powered lights, tarps, batteries, and work gloves.

The county noted that used clothing and linens are not being accepted as part of the collection effort.

Broward County Mayor Mark D. Bogen said the local Venezuelan community has deep ties to those affected by the disaster.

“Broward County is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Venezuelan communities in the country, and when our neighbors’ families back home are hurting, we hurt too. The devastation caused by the recent earthquakes demands more than just thoughts and prayers; it requires immediate tangible action. By launching this countywide relief fund, we are creating a direct, secure pipeline for our community to provide essential supplies and financial support to those on the ground,” said Broward County Mayor Mark D. Bogen. “Broward County has always stood tall in times of humanitarian crisis, and I have no doubt our residents will show that same profound generosity and solidarity now.”

To make donating as convenient as possible, collection bins will be available at several Broward County library branches beginning July 6. Participating libraries include the Miramar Branch Library and Education Center, North Regional/Broward College Library in Coconut Creek, Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs, South Regional/Broward County Library and Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines, and West Regional Library in Plantation. Library hours vary by location, with most operating from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. later in the week.

Donation sites will also be available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at several Broward County parks, including Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City, Central Broward Park and Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Markham Park in Sunrise, Tradewinds Park and Stables in Coconut Creek, and T.Y. Park in Hollywood.

County leaders say every donation can make a meaningful difference for families who have lost homes, belongings, and access to essential services following the earthquakes.

Officials are encouraging individuals, community organizations, and businesses to participate in the relief effort by contributing supplies at any of the designated collection sites. Additional information about the campaign is available through Broward County’s official resources.

As recovery efforts continue in Venezuela, Broward County hopes the countywide drive will provide practical assistance while demonstrating solidarity with the many Venezuelan families connected to the South Florida community.
