Broward County approves Motorola Solutions agreement for Next Generation 911 upgrade

Broward County, Florida – Broward County is preparing to move its emergency response system into a new era, with officials approving a major upgrade aimed at making 911 service faster, stronger and better equipped for the way people communicate today.

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has awarded a multi-year agreement to Motorola Solutions Connectivity, Inc. to serve as the County’s Next Generation 911 Core Services Provider. The decision follows a competitive Request for Proposal process and marks a key step in replacing older emergency communications technology with a digital system built for the future.

At the center of the project is a National Emergency Number Association i3 compliant Next Generation 911 system. Motorola Solutions will provide Broward County with a secure and resilient Emergency Services IP Network, known as ESInet, along with Next Generation Core Services for all Public Safety Answering Points across the county.

For residents and visitors, the change is not just technical. It is practical. Next Generation 911 is designed to move beyond the limits of legacy analog systems. Instead of relying mainly on voice calls, the upgraded system will support a broadband-based platform that can receive voice, text, images, video and data. That means emergency call centers will be better positioned to handle information in more ways, especially when every second matters.

The new system is also expected to improve location accuracy through advanced geospatial routing. That can help emergency calls reach the right center more efficiently. Built-in redundancy and network diversity are also part of the plan, giving the system stronger backup capability and greater reliability during high-demand moments or disruptions.

County officials say the upgrade will also improve coordination among agencies and jurisdictions. Public Safety Answering Points will be able to work through a more connected platform, helping strengthen communication across the emergency response network. The system is also being built with future technologies in mind, along with cybersecurity protections and compliance with national standards.

“Broward County is proud to lead the way in public safety innovation,” said Mayor Mark D. Bogen. “With Next Generation 911, we are ensuring that our residents and first responders have access to the most advanced and resilient emergency communications system available. This transition will save lives and strengthen our community for years to come.”

Tracy Jackson, Director of the Office of Regional Communications and Technology, said the project reflects the county’s broader commitment to public safety.

“This investment in NG911 is a testament to Broward County’s dedication to public safety, innovation, and service to our community,” Jackson said. “We are building a safer, more connected future for all residents and visitors.”

The transition to NG911 is expected to take place over the next 12 to 18 months. During that time, the county plans to carry out extensive testing, training and stakeholder outreach to help ensure the system is implemented smoothly.
