BSO launches its annual traffic enforcement initiative to curb dangerous driving behavior

Broward County, Florida – Broward Sheriff’s Office has launched its third annual Operation Summer Splash, a traffic enforcement initiative aimed at promoting road safety on the county’s busy streets during the summer season. This initiative, led by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Regional Traffic Unit, seeks to mitigate dangerous driving behaviors that intensify with the summer’s increased traffic flows.
Targeting Dangerous Driving Behaviors
With nearly two million residents and a constant stream of visitors and tourists, Broward County’s roads are frequently congested, leading to risky driving behaviors. The focus of Operation Summer Splash is to educate drivers and reduce incidences of aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Highlighting the urgency of this initiative, data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration indicates that in 2022, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities.
The operation is scheduled to run from today, Monday, June 24, through Friday, August 2. During this period, law enforcement efforts will be intensified across the county, particularly in areas under the jurisdiction of the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), including unincorporated Central Broward, Port Everglades, and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Increased Law Enforcement Presence
To combat the rise in traffic violations, there will be a increased law enforcement presence on highways and major roadways throughout the county. This increased visibility of traffic officers is designed to ensure the safety of all road users and to encourage adherence to traffic laws.

Safety Recommendations for Drivers
In conjunction with the enforcement efforts, the BSO offers critical advice to drivers to help avoid common pitfalls that lead to accidents. They urge drivers to allow ample time to reach their destinations, accounting for possible delays such as traffic accidents and road construction. Additionally, the BSO advises drivers to maintain a calm demeanor behind the wheel. In situations involving aggressive interactions with other drivers, it is recommended to avoid making eye contact, remain composed, and remember that no roadside dispute is worth the risk of an accident.
If drivers find themselves in stressful or dangerous driving conditions, they should look for a safe location to pull over and regroup. This proactive approach to handling road stress is vital for maintaining safety and preventing accidents.
By following these guidelines and benefiting from the focused efforts of Operation Summer Splash, Broward County hopes to significantly reduce traffic-related incidents and ensure a safer summer for everyone on the road.
