Fort Lauderdale bridge repairs will bring months of lane shifts and sidewalk detours to South Andrews Avenue

Broward County, Florida – Drivers and pedestrians using South Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale will soon see a long-planned construction effort take shape as Broward County moves forward with bridge repairs between Davie Boulevard and Southwest 11th Street.

The work, funded through gas-tax dollars, is set to begin Monday, April 13, and, unless weather or unexpected site conditions interfere, is expected to continue through August 2026.

County officials say the project is designed to strengthen and refresh a heavily used stretch of roadway and bridge infrastructure.

The improvements will include replacing the concrete bridge barrier walls, rebuilding sections of sidewalk, and completing milling and resurfacing work along the corridor.

Together, those upgrades are intended to address both structural needs and the everyday wear that comes with steady traffic in the area.

Construction will begin on the east side of the bridge, affecting the northbound lanes first. During that phase, crews will close the outermost lane along with the sidewalk beside it.

Even with the work underway, two travel lanes will remain open at all times through a traffic shift designed to keep vehicles moving. Pedestrians will be redirected around the construction zone while the repairs are in progress.

Once work on the east side is finished, the project will move across to the west side, where the southbound lanes will undergo the same pattern of lane closures and sidewalk detours.

In addition to the daytime impacts, nighttime closures will also be needed when crews begin milling and resurfacing operations, a step that usually requires a more controlled work window.

The bridge sits within two Broward County commission districts, with the southbound lanes located in District 8, represented by Vice Mayor Robert McKinzie, and the northbound lanes in District 4, represented by Commissioner Lamar Fisher.

County officials are urging the public to remain alert in the area and allow extra time when traveling through the corridor during construction.

Project Manager Ronald Chung can also be reached directly at 305-322-2923 or by email at [email protected]. Broward County says the inconvenience will be temporary, but the work is considered necessary to improve the bridge’s condition and keep this stretch of South Andrews Avenue functioning safely into the future.
