Fort Lauderdale ends precautionary restrictions in Intracoastal zone following successful remediation

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The City of Fort Lauderdale has officially lifted its precautionary advisory for swimming and other recreational activities in some parts of the Seminole River Canal and the Intracoastal Waterway. City authorities said that the advisory, which has been in place since Saturday, June 21, 2025, is no longer needed.
The affected region was the waterway between SE 15th Street and SE 17th Street, which was bordered on the west by Cordova Road and on the east by the Intracoastal Waterway. After an obstruction in an 8-inch sewage gravity main caused wastewater to flow into the stormwater system, the advisory was issued as a safety measure.
After the incident occurred, city workers quickly responded and began keeping an eye on the waters that were affected. Since then, several tests of the water quality have shown that the area now passes Florida’s criteria for surface water quality. As a result, restrictions on swimming, boating, and other recreational activities in the previously restricted zone have been lifted immediately.
City officials emphasized the importance of public awareness and swift communication during such events. They want people in Fort Lauderdale to stay informed through Alert FTL, the city’s emergency notification system. The tool lets the city quickly send out updates by text, email, or phone. You may sign up for Alert FTL for free online.
Residents can contact 954-828-8000, email [email protected], or use the FixItFTL mobile app and website to get more information or ask questions.
Officials praised the community for its help during the alert period and advised everyone to keep reporting any strange or suspicious activities on the waterways.
