New podcast series brings sea life and civic stories to life for Broward listeners

Broward County, Florida – Broward County is getting into digital storytelling with the release of two new podcast series. Each one offers a different taste to people in the community. These programs are the product of many county departments working together to include, teach, and connect residents in new and creative ways.

One of the new offerings, South Florida Reef Rangers, is a vibrant adventure aimed primarily at school-aged children. The Marine Resources Section of the Resilience Environment Department’s Natural Resources Division made the podcast, which goes deep—both literally and figuratively—into the marine creatures and wonders of South Florida.

Each episode is hosted by professional marine biologists and takes listeners on snorkeling adventures across beautiful reefs and into the wonders of the wide ocean. Through fun stories and even “interviews” with the animals themselves, listeners learn about a parade of interesting sea species, including what they eat, where they live, and how they stay alive.

The first episode, which came out on June 11, is about Sabrina, a marine researcher from Broward County, who goes out to sea to look for the hard-to-find balloon fish. She talks about adaptations and the pelagic zone, which is a strange part of the ocean’s water column, along the journey. Every month, a marine scientist starts the episode by talking about the day’s goal, which might be a boat excursion or a swim to the reef. They also go over what to pack and critical safety tips, including utilizing dive flags and being smart about boats.

The episodes give kids exciting hints about which ocean animal will be featured and end with interactive challenges that let listeners test their new knowledge. South Florida Reef Rangers is meant to make marine science interesting and memorable by using comedy, curiosity, and hands-on activities.

The county’s Office of Public Communications has also released Broward Connects, a podcast for anyone who wants to learn more about how local government works. This series gives you a look at the people, policies, and events that keep the county running. It has honest interviews and stories about the people and programs that are defining Broward’s future, from big events to the services that locals use every day.

The first episode, which aired on June 3, features an exciting sports milestone: Cognizant Major League Cricket is coming to Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, where nine matches will be played from July 1 to July 6. Future episodes will include important news, policy deep-dives, and inspirational profiles, all with the goal of bringing the community closer together.
