Trump’s name is coming to a Florida airport—and the backlash from critics has been explosive
Florida – A decision to rename a major Florida airport after President Donald Trump has sparked a wave of angry reactions, heated criticism, and even a disturbing threat that has added another layer of controversy to an already divisive issue.
Beginning July 9, Palm Beach International Airport will officially become the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” after legislation signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year takes effect. The airport, located only a few miles from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, will also receive a new airport code, changing from PBI to DJT.
While supporters view the move as a fitting tribute to a sitting president with deep ties to South Florida, many critics have reacted with frustration and outrage. Public comments submitted to the airport since the proposal became public in March reveal just how sharply divided opinions have become.
Records obtained through a public records request showed that travelers flooded the airport with messages after learning about the planned name change. A large number of those responses opposed the decision, with some expressing anger and others threatening to avoid the airport altogether.
Angry reactions pour in
Many of the comments reflected strong emotions from travelers who disagreed with honoring Trump in such a visible way.
One person wrote, “I will never again utilize PBI for any travel plans now that it is named for the orange-headed clown.”
Another traveler made a similar pledge, stating, “If you actually change the name of this airport and honor that man, I will make it my mission in life to never, ever, EVER spend a penny at your airport.”
Others simply pleaded with officials to stop the change before it became official.
“Please!!! Block this travesty,” one traveler wrote.
Another commenter, identifying themselves as “Angry Flyer,” compared the situation to a recent dispute involving a major cultural institution in Washington.
“The fate of the Kennedy Center in DC should be instructive as to how well this may play out,” the person wrote in a March 31 submission.
The comments highlight how a decision involving an airport has become part of a much larger national debate surrounding Trump and his legacy. Supporters and opponents continue to clash over efforts to place the president’s name on public buildings, programs, and landmarks across the country.
Bomb threat raises concerns
Among the many comments received by the airport, one stood out for a far more alarming reason.
According to reports, a message included a threat to place explosive devices inside the airport or on a departing aircraft unless a payment of $30 million was made. The threat referenced the president and appeared amid the growing controversy surrounding the renaming effort.
It remains unclear whether authorities investigated the threat or what actions may have been taken in response.
While most comments focused on criticism of the airport’s new name, the appearance of a threat raised concerns about how emotionally charged the debate has become.
Other submissions referenced Trump’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has said he ended his relationship with Epstein years before the criminal allegations became public.
Airport responds to controversy
As criticism mounted, Palm Beach International Airport addressed the issue directly through a frequently asked questions section on its website.
Responding to concerns from travelers, airport officials acknowledged that reactions to the name change would vary.
The airport stated that it understood “that the required name change may be received in different ways by our passengers,” while emphasizing that operations and customer service would remain unchanged.
Officials also stressed their ongoing commitment to travelers.
“While some things may evolve over time, our core focus remains the same: providing a safe, reliable and welcoming airport experience.”
The statement appeared aimed at reassuring passengers that regardless of political views, the airport would continue serving the public as normal.
Cost and broader significance
The renaming project is not limited to replacing signs. According to reports, the overall rebranding effort and related improvements are expected to cost roughly $5.5 million.
The airport will become one of the most prominent facilities in the country to carry Trump’s name. It joins a growing list of projects and initiatives that have been linked to the president in recent years, including proposals involving federal properties and commemorative items.
Not every effort has gone smoothly. Just last week, Trump’s name was removed from the exterior of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, highlighting the legal and political battles that often accompany such naming decisions.
The Trump Organization has previously stated that neither Trump nor members of his family will financially benefit from the airport renaming.
According to the organization, they “will not receive any royalty, licensing fee, or financial consideration whatsoever from the proposed airport renaming.”
With the July 9 implementation date approaching, the controversy shows no signs of disappearing. What began as a state-approved name change has evolved into a broader political flashpoint, drawing reactions ranging from simple criticism to outright boycotts and, in one troubling case, a threat involving explosives.
As Palm Beach International Airport prepares to become President Donald J. Trump International Airport, the debate surrounding the decision continues to reflect the intense emotions that Trump still inspires among both supporters and critics across the country.
