Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The Broward County Highway Construction and Engineering Division is set to enhance pedestrian safety at a busy intersection in Fort Lauderdale with the installation of a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal system.
Scheduled to start on Tuesday, April 16, this project is anticipated to conclude by July 2024, depending on weather conditions and other potential delays. This safety initiative is funded by the state gas tax and will take place at Southeast 3rd Avenue and Southeast 1st Street.
Key Project Enhancements
The new HAWK signal system is designed to improve pedestrian safety by controlling vehicle traffic and allowing safer pedestrian crossing at the intersection. The project will include several improvements:
- Installation of a new traffic control cabinet and pedestrian push button pedestals.
- Upgrading existing pedestrian sidewalks and ramps to comply with current ADA standards.
- Milling and resurfacing of the intersection’s asphalt pavement.
- New signing and pavement markings to guide both pedestrians and drivers.
