DeSantis backs Trump’s mass deportation plan, vetoes immigration bill for being too weak

Tallahassee, Florida – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially vetoed Senate Bill 2-B (SB 2-B), an immigration-related measure passed during a special legislative session. Along with a clear policy position, the decision highlights his advocacy of more forceful immigration enforcement policies in the state.
DeSantis made it abundantly evident in his veto message that his rejection of SB 2-B resulted from his belief the bill did not go far enough rather than from opposition to immigration enforcement. “The State of Florida must lead in making resources and personnel across the state available to support the Trump Administration’s deportation mission,” DeSantis wrote in his letter.
The governor’s veto of SB 2-B fits his larger agenda to tighten state-wide immigration policies. Although the rejected measure sought to handle immigration enforcement, DeSantis contended that it lacked important clauses required to have a major impact.
