Tamarac celebrates the residents and public servants behind the city’s everyday progress
Tamarac, Florida – A city meeting usually moves through agendas, votes and official business. On July 8, however, Tamarac’s City Commission paused to put the spotlight on the people whose work, achievements and service have helped strengthen the community.
The honorees represented different chapters of city life, students beginning new journeys, a longtime employee closing an important career, and community leaders whose contributions continue to leave a lasting mark.
During the City Commission meeting, this year’s Tamarac Scholars Scholarship recipients were recognized as they prepared to take the next step toward their educational goals. The recognition celebrated both their accomplishments so far and the opportunities waiting ahead as they continue their studies.

The Commission also honored Rufus James with a Retirement Proclamation. The presentation marked his years of dedicated service and offered the city an opportunity to thank him as he entered retirement. Commissioners extended their best wishes for the next stage of his life after a career defined by commitment.

Another moment of recognition came with the presentation of the Community Hero Award to Lisa Dunkley. The award highlighted her commitment and the meaningful difference she has made within Tamarac. Her recognition reflected the impact that steady community involvement can have on the people and neighborhoods around it.
George Gadson was also honored during the meeting with both a proclamation and the Juneteenth Legacy Award. The presentations recognized his leadership, service and contributions to the community, placing his work among the lasting efforts celebrated by the city.
Together, the recognitions created a broad picture of what community achievement can look like. It can be a student pursuing an educational goal, an employee completing years of public service or a resident whose leadership continues to influence others.
By pausing its regular business to celebrate these individuals, the Commission placed attention on the people behind Tamarac’s progress. The July 8 meeting became more than a formal gathering. It served as a public thank-you to residents and community members whose efforts have helped make Tamarac stronger and more vibrant.
